Not every anime has the same animation style, and the vast majority of the anime that I've seen has little/no "randomness" in it, excluding things like Lucky Star and Nichijou. Anime is a medium, and just like Western shows, can encompass any genre. Some are romance, some are action, some are sci-fi or cyberpunk, some are drama, some are comedy. The only real difference between anime and Western shows is culture. He's pretty much spot on about what's good and bad about a film and knows how to properly weigh them both to estimate the film's overall worth and then compare it with other film's in the genre. Most importantly he is open to all sorts of film and "gets" the movies spanning all genres I've seen him review; oddly enough, many film critics do not have this quality, which is really apparently when reading or watching many of Siskel or Ebert's old reviews, or L.
